Take a look at the Python imaging library (http://www.pythonware.com/products/pil/index.htm). I'm not sure if EPS reading is supported, but I know it's supported in some way at least. If it is supported, use the pilconvert (http://www.pythonware.com/library/pil/handbook/pilconvert.htm) for easy converting.
